Jolly Phonics

The ELC supports the School’s Early Years Literacy focus on Jolly Phonics. This structured approach to Phonics, teaching the letter sounds in an enjoyable, multi-sensory way, enables children to use them to read and write words. In Jolly Phonics, the 42 main sounds of English are taught, not just the alphabet, with an accompanying action to aid in learning and recall.

In the ELC, we introduce the letters in alphabetical order whilst incorporating the Jolly Phonics techniques. Our focus is on exposing the children to the alphabet using the correct sounds and names of the letters and how to pronounce and write the letters correctly. Once your child commences Reception, the sounds are introduced in seven groups, which are designed to help children begin spelling and reading quickly.
