Students experience an engaging and fun life at Verdun. From the Early Learning Centre to Year 7, the range of experiences change but the Staff are always mindful of creating a learning environment and culture which intrigues children’s brains and puts smiles on their faces. With our focus on Inquiry teaching and learning, children are motivated to ask deep and meaningful questions and then are provided time, challenges and engaging learning episodes to either answer those questions themselves or within the class context. Our teachers are creative and make classroom life interesting. They use excursions and incursions to encourage children to wonder and learn from the real world. Our camps, which are described elsewhere, are wonderful social and meaningful learning occasions and, where possible, the camps will connect with the Inquiry teaching and learning in the classroom.
Student life is enriched with our voluntary before school, after school and lunch time clubs and students with particular skills have the opportunity to enhance those. Our students benefit from the opportunity to play in HCCS Netball and Basketball teams and participate in many inter-school sporting carnivals.
Over 100 students learn instruments and many take the opportunity to either play in the Band, Orchestra, Ensembles or Choir. Student life is enhanced by the community events of the School and the children particularly enjoy having their grandparents, mothers and fathers visit on special days where classrooms are open for delightful conversations.
Our students are fortunate to have access to Nature Play and the natural environment on our new adjacent property where they can build cubbies, create games with logs and sticks and enjoy being in the great outdoors at lunch times and in lesson exploration. Our ELC children, in particular, love their time each week in Nature Play.
